hospitalists

Physician Coverage: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

Working in conjunction with your primary care physician and hospital staff, a hospitalist is a physician assigned and stationed on-site at the hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It has been found to improve consistency of patient care, improve efficiencies and response times.

At the June 2011 Board Meeting, the Board authorized staff to execute an agreement with Rural Physician Group (RPG) to provide hospitalists for The Memorial Hospital. RPG has assigned three physicians to TMH, each will be on site 7 - 10 days per month. The program began August 1, 2011.

Alternative to an on-call system

Traditionally, patients were admitted, seen and discharged by their primary care physician. If the physician was needed outside of typical daily rounds at the hospital, the physician, or the physician on-call that day, would be contacted.

A hospitalist program allows for qualified physicians to actually "live" at the hospital on a rotating basis. It provides an efficient and effective way to care for patients without needing to wait for primary care physicians in a traditional arrangement. The hospitalist is in touch with your primary care physician with updates, consultations, etc. as need be.
